Description

What’s this all about?

I’m a writer and teacher. These open sessions are for anyone to come along and get some writing inspiration and do some writing in a friendly non-judgmental atmosphere. Hopefully you’ll meet a new idea that grabs you and won’t let go. Or you might want to take a quick break from a longer piece and just fancy an hour of fun writing.

Who are the workshops for?

Perhaps you want to give writing a go but aren’t sure what will happen. Maybe you used to write and want to get back to it. Or you write, but would like more structured inspiration and a practice session. The sessions are designed so that you can make the most of them whatever mood you’re in.

What will you learn?

The workshops are designed to for you to write an idea that might become something. Create a character, object or setting that you might explore further. Or engage with an aspect of story and structure that inspires you get pen to paper.

What do we do?

We usually have a warm up exercise around the theme of the workshop, do a little bit free writing, and then there’s a chance to build a more structured scene that could go on to become a short story, or even spark an idea for a novel. If you are full of ideas we hope to bring them into sharper focus. If you’re feeling a bit creatively empty we aim to fill you up and get you going again.

Do we share work?

In these particular sessions we don’t read out work or share it with others. Come and experiment with no judgement.

Why run free sessions?

I find it’s really beneficial to my own creative practice and makes me consider the craft of writing. I like running classes as a creative endeavour rather than a financial transaction (even though I do those as well to pay the rent!).
